Over the course of the 2010s, wrestling companies and audiences finally began to give women’s wrestling the respect it deserved. While companies like WWE have had women’s divisions at different points in history, the concept really didn’t begin to receive its due attention until fairly recently. Women like Sasha Banks and Charlotte (daughter of the legendary Ric Flair) currently lead a component to WWE that is now given nearly as much respect and attention as the men’s division. Then you have companies like Lucha Underground, which features both men and women competing for the same championships.
As we look at the current state of women’s wrestling, it’s worth looking back at the athletes who helped to keep the notion of women’s wrestling alive. These were women who competed, advocated, and gave their bodies for divisions that were often ridiculed or neglected. It is a shame that some of them are not around to see the state of women’s wrestling in the 21st century.
