Puffy eyes or “bags” happen for a number of reasons, ranging from allergies and colds to exhaustion and stress. While they don’t pose a major health risk, they do bring down your confidence. Luckily, they are plenty of ways to get rid of them, so you can look fresh and full of confidence once more.
Begin With Preventative Treatment
Step one is always trying to stop the problem before it starts. It’s simple. Aim to stay properly hydrated by drinking the recommended eight cups a day, and always try to get eight hours of restful sleep. If you have severe allergies, ask your doctor about a non-drowsy medication suitable for daily use. Also try to keep a handle on stress by practicing breathing techniques, meditation, yoga, or gentle stretching.
The Cold is Your Friend
While preventative measures are best, sometimes you’ll end up with bags under your eyes anyways. When that happens, the cold is your new best friend. The cold helps to reduce swelling, which is exactly what you want.
One favorite tradition is to use a cold spoon. Place a clean spoon in the freezer. When it’s really cold, gently press the bottom of the spoon beneath your eye. Repeat on the other eye for an immediate reduction in puffiness.
You could also use an ice mask made specifically for eyes, or cucumbers. Cucumbers are great because they are always colder than room temperature because of the way they grow.
Herbs Are Great, Too
Herbs have been used in traditional folk medicines for a slew of ailments, and puffy eyes are no exception. Lavender, chamomile, rosemary, and tea tree are especially useful. The best way to make use of them is to either use them fresh, or else buy organic essential oils.
You can create a fantastic under-eye toner by combining 2 drops of any of these essential oils with 2 tablespoons of witch hazel. For more sensitive skin types, you can create a gentler toner by boiling the herbs in their natural form in two cups of distilled water. After it cools, strain and store in an airtight container. Both of these can be applied by soaking a cotton ball in the toner and applying directly beneath your eyes. It is not necessary to rinse, but be careful not to get any of the mixture in your eyes.
Overnight creams can be made by combining 5 drops of any essential oils with a quarter cup of coconut oil and 2 tablespoons of shea butter. Melt the coconut oil in the microwave, and add the other ingredients. Combine well, and store in the fridge until it is solid. To use, simply apply beneath the eyes before bed. Rinse when you wake up, and wash your face as usual to get rid of puffy eyes.
